Pocahontas is the new princess movie that I recently watched. I think I made the right decision when I bought the 10 Movie Princess Collection DVD at the time when I was shopping for DVDs at Walmart for my niece. I did not have a chance to watch princess movies in my younger years because I grew up in a poor family. We did not have enough money for our food much less for DVDs. The Pocahontas that I watched was not the Walt Disney Pictures film. I thought it was, I should have read the fine print, regardless I enjoyed it. It was a production of American Film Investment Corporation.
Pocahontas is based on the true story of the young Indian princess. Her fame came from her noble act for keeping the peace between her tribe and the arriving settlers. The young Pocahontas, daughter of the Indian chief Powhatan, was playing in the grassy fields near the shore when she saw strange pale-faced men arriving aboard ships. Surprised and scared, Pocahontas ran to the protection of her father and tribe when one of the settlers attempted to question her.
Instruments to the Road of Success and Peace
A small number of her tribe, some of whom had bad experiences with white men in the past, instantly considered the strangers to be their enemies. While Powhatan took no action against the white men, he asked his tribe as well as his daughter to stay away from them until they would know exactly what they were up to. While Pocahontas was playing with her friends, she took her father’s advice to stay away from the white men but eventually met the young captain of the pale-faced, John Smith. Though she was a bit scared, the two soon became good friends. That friendship was the beginning of a peace between the two groups of people. Some members of both groups, however, were not happy. When the hard winter came and the food started to become scarce, both men and women put aside their fears and prejudices and learned to cooperate with each other in order for all of them to survive.
Pocahontas being a smart young girl and the good young leader of the pale-faced, John Smith, were the instruments to the road of success and peace for both tribes.
The theme, “Land of Pocahontas” is a nice song that played into the opening and closing of the movie. I will definitely recommend this film for young children and to anyone who is looking for an enjoyable animated adventure.
