The only constant in this world is C-H-A-N-G-E. I have been out of school for more than a decade now and since then, there have been great strides in technology and innovation. The field of education has benefited greatly from those improvements. The advancement in computer technology and especially the internet has greatly increased both access to information and the way we interact with one another.
Many parents now prefer to homeschool their kids. My sister and brother in-law in Colorado are among them. The new UnVirtual School, Provost Academy, is just what they are looking for to help educate my niece.
Provost Academy is an online public school that currently serves grades 6-12 in Ohio and 9-12 in both South Carolina and Colorado. They are an accredited school which means the diplomas that students receive after graduating from Provost Academy are recognized by all colleges and the military. Since Provost Academy is part of the public school system, there is no cost to enroll.
The flexibility of online programming offers great advantages to any busy parent trying to give their children a good education. I have been thinking about attending online classes myself because they allow students like me to learn at our own pace. The first time around, I earned a degree in engineering but now I am thinking about going into nursing.
High school is an important time in life when many build life long relationships while learning how to socialize with others. High school was actually the favorite days of my life and that kind of personal interaction is hard to come by when attending an online school.
The goal of Provost Academy is to create an environment that incorporates a social aspect into an online school experience. Provost Academy provides social interaction to their students by having their teachers, advisors and administrators work to build one on one relationships with themselves and other students. They challenge each student to go beyond what they think possible but still deeply care about the learning process and not just the outcome.
They connect students with other students who have shared dreams, goals, aspirations and future plans, believing they can be an inspiration and support to one another. Provost Academy seeks ways for students to engage with professionals in their fields of interest and to talk with, learn from and absorb the information that can be gleaned from an expert over a cup of coffee. On top of that, they connect students to opportunities to explore their interests, to expand their sphere of awareness, and to prepare themselves for the challenges in life. Learning can happen anywhere and they want to expand the definition of anywhere.
In honor of this, Provost Academy invites you to help them launch the UnVirtual movement by sharing your ideas, thoughts and suggestions on ways in which an online school can be more social at My UnVirtual School Idea. Do you have ideas to make an online school more social? Use #MyUnVirtualSchool.
