Kinilaw or raw fish salad is a popular dish in the Philippines, especially for birthdays and family get together. My sister ordered this raw fish salad pictured the day she and her family from Germany arrived in our hometown in the Philippines. It is made with tuna, cucumber, vinegar, onions, ginger, salt, hot pepper and such.
I am not good at making kinilaw. I tried making some with anchovies once but it did not turn out well and I have never tried making it again since. The problem was probably the anchovies. They were not fresh and had been frozen for months. My hubby told me that it would probably not be a good idea to use anchovies but I tried it anyway because I was craving it then.
Freshly caught fish are the best for kinilaw. Since ocean fish are expensive here in my area, my hubby suggested that I should try making some with fresh crappie but I did not like the idea. Eventually, I will give it a try in the future. I just don’t want to end up wasting good fish.
